Last night was the first time my family went out to dinner by ourselves. The term family still makes me think of mom, dad, brother, cousins, etc… But I am talking about my new family, the one with me, Rachel and Logan (and of course, Mason). We had been out to eat with others, but never just the three of us until last night. It went well, in fact, I felt more like a dad than ever before.
Maybe it was the awkward way you have to carry a car seat with it bouncing off your leg or straining your arm.
Maybe it was the way we had to request a table for two and a half.
Maybe it was the older lady saying ‘awww, how cute’ as we walked by her.
No, I think it was how comfortable I felt with Logan in the booth next to me and Rachel across the table. It just felt like right. I felt like dad.
I know many of you have seen this video of the rapping dad from Atlanta, but I laugh even harder now when I watch it.
“No, you can call me Wolverine, snikty snikty snoin snikt snikt.”
My friend Rob reminded of that classic line from Mallrats when we first spoke about the arrival of our first child, Logan Fenton Nix. We did not specifically name our son after a comic book hero, but if I were to do such a thing, Wolverine is not a bad choice.
I want to extend a deep and sincere THANK YOU to everyone who called, visited, sent cards, mailed gifts and showered us with love and support during the most special time of our lives. Some of you even made me look bad by sending cashmere and Tiffany boxes (my wife doesn’t get those things from me). Seriously, thank you all for everything.
Logan is doing great! Mom and dad are the happiest and proudest zombies alive (or living dead). We can’t wait for you to meet our little Wolverine!
Video is rated R, but the first 30 seconds give you the classic Wolverine line.
and we will have our first baby. Rachel is 4cm and almost fully effaced (I know way too much about this stuff). Rachel is doing great! She looks amazing (see below) and I am so proud to be going through this with her.
Our midwife (Rachel’s doctor is pregnant and will not be delivering our child) thinks induction may be an option next week as the baby is already -1 station (I told you I knew my stuff).
Thank you all for your calls, your emails, your text messages and your thoughts and prayers. We love you all and can’t wait to introduce you to our newest family member. Stay tuned and remember to make your predictions at http://bradnix.com/play-the-baby-pool-game/
Rachel and I have packed our bags in preparation for a quick dash to the hospital. She learned Thursday that she is 3 centimeters dilated and we’re not sure how fast it will happen from here. Everyone wants to know if we “are ready” and I honestly don’t know. I think we are both excited, yet nervous. We are anxious, yet hesitant. We are prepared, yet completely unaware of what are getting into. I guess we’re like every other first-time parents.
